The new space has seating for 70 with another 20 seats at the bar. A 25-seat outdoor patio facing the Detroit River is also open. Greenery on the patio includes herbs, long grass and olive trees that the owners imported from Spain. Some of the furniture and interior aesthetics that characterized the Royal Oak location have made the move to the new space, including white shelving, ornate vases and white lounge furniture. La Dulce will be open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In mid-June, owner Luis Negrete announced the closing of the Royal Oak location to make the necessary renovations and prepare for the move downtown. Plans were also revealed to expand kitchen operations to offer dining on a larger scale.
Executive chefs Juan Negrete and Hector Sanz continue to lead the La Dulce culinary team and have added new items to their Spanish tapas-style menu, including suckling pig and shareable paella. They’ve doubled the size of the restaurant’s Royal Oak menu.
New menu items include an expanded choice of shareable paellas. (There are four, including a squid ink and a pork rib option.) Also new: a Tomahawk steak with wild mushrooms and hand-cut fries and a piquillo pepper stuffed with lump crab and served with a roasted red bell pepper sauce.
A craft drink menu is divided into cocktails, spritzes and house gin and tonics. La Dulce signature drinks include sangria that is fortified with rum, a house spice blend and fresh citrus. There’s also a menu of cocktails with clever names like To Your Health! (Milagro tequila, mango Patron, watermelon and lime) and the Silly Saylor (Flor de Cana Rum, banana, lime, orange and aromatic bitters).
Known for signature dishes that include Iberico cured loin croquette and ceviche, La Dulce was named a Detroit Free Press Top 10 Best New Restaurant in 2016.
